ACHILLES (2) was built in 1920 by Scotts' Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. at Greenock with a tonnage of 11426grt, a length of 507ft 4in, a beam of 63ft 2in and a service speed of 12 knots. Laid down in 1916 on the slipway vacated by the Tyndareus she was eventually launched on 8th January 1920 for the Ocean Steam Ship Co. at a cost of £545,000 and placed on the Far East to U. S. A. service. In December 1926 she was requisitioned and used to transport 1000 horses and men during the 'China Affair' steaming at full speed directly to Shanghai. She was sold to the Admiralty in August 1940 and converted into a destroyer depot ship. As there was already an HMS Achilles, a cruiser which came to prominence during the Battle of the River Plate, she was renamed HMS Blenheim. Qualification for WWII medals (Royal Navy & WRNS) 1939-45 Star 6 months (180 days) service afloat in areas of active operations. Atlantic Star 3rd September 1939 - 8th May 1945 6 months service afloat in the Atlantic or Home waters. Italy Star 11th June 1943 - 8th May 1945 Awarded for operational service in Sicily or Italy. 1939-45 Star must have been earned before qualifying period could commence. Defence Medal Service in the Forces in non-operational areas subjected to air attack or closely threatened, provided such service lasted for 3 or more years. War Medal Awarded to full-time personnel of the Armed Forces wherever they served, operational or non-operational, providing that it was of 28 days or more duration.
